Legal
Terms of Use
Last updated October 23, 2026 (draft)
Draft pending legal review
In short: UMBR is self-custodial software running on testnets. You keep your keys, you are responsible for how you use it, and there is no real money involved yet.
1. What these terms cover
These terms apply when you use the UMBR websites at umbr.trade, the web app, the documentation, the SDK and any other interface we publish (together, “UMBR”). By using UMBR you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use it. How we handle information is covered by the Privacy Policy and the Cookie Policy; the risks are summarised in the Risk disclosures.
2. Testnet only, for now
UMBR currently runs only on test networks: Robinhood Chain testnet and Tempo Moderato testnet. Tokens there are test tokens with no monetary value. Never send real assets to a testnet address or contract; they may be lost.
We may redeploy test contracts, reset state, or stop supporting a test network at any time. Earlier test balances can become unusable when that happens. Mainnet pools are not configured. Before they are, we will publish updated terms.
3. What UMBR is and is not
UMBR is software. It gives you an interface to smart contracts on public blockchains and tools that build zero-knowledge proofs on your device. It is not a bank, a money transmitter, a custodian, an exchange or a broker, and it does not take deposits.
Transactions are carried out by the blockchain network, not by us. Once a transaction is confirmed on-chain it generally cannot be reversed, by you or by us.
4. You hold your keys
UMBR is self-custodial. We never receive your wallet keys, seed phrase or the secrets that open your private notes. Those are created and kept on your device, and proofs are produced there. The pool contracts release funds only against a valid proof; there is no function that lets us move them.
That means you are responsible for your devices, wallets, keys, notes and backups. If you lose them we cannot recover them for you.
5. Who may use UMBR
You may use UMBR only if you can form a binding agreement where you live, and only if doing so is lawful for you. You may not use UMBR if you are subject to sanctions, act on behalf of someone who is, or are located in a place where using it is prohibited. You are responsible for following the laws that apply to you.
6. Acceptable use
Do not use UMBR to:
- move proceeds of crime, finance terrorism, or evade sanctions;
- defraud, harass or harm anyone, or infringe their rights;
- attack, overload or interfere with the websites, the relayer, the contracts or other users;
- misrepresent a proof, or present someone else's proof as your own.
Security research in good faith is welcome. Please report issues privately by direct message to @umbrtrade on X and give us reasonable time to fix them before disclosure.
7. Proofs you choose to share
UMBR lets you create disclosure proofs about your own activity, for example that a payment was made or that a balance is above a threshold. You decide what to prove and to whom. Once you share a proof, the reader can keep it and show it to others; we cannot recall it. Check what a proof reveals before you share it.
8. Relayers, networks and other services
UMBR depends on things we do not control: blockchain networks and their validators, RPC providers, token issuers, browser wallets and, if you use one, a relayer. A relayer can submit or decline to submit your transaction but cannot change it. Token issuers may freeze or block tokens under their own policies. Third-party services have their own terms, and we are not responsible for them.
9. No advice
Nothing on UMBR is financial, investment, tax or legal advice. UMBR has no token, and nothing we publish is an offer of one.
10. Fees
UMBR charges no fee on testnet. You pay network fees to the network, and on Tempo those are paid in a stablecoin. A relayer may charge a fee, shown to you before you approve. Any mainnet fees will be published before mainnet pools are configured.
11. Content, code and feedback
The UMBR name, logo, site design and text belong to us. Code we publish under an open-source licence is governed by that licence. If you send us feedback or ideas, you allow us to use them without obligation to you.
12. Provided as is
UMBR is experimental and provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises about uptime, accuracy, security, the level of privacy you will get, or fitness for any purpose. Software, cryptography and blockchains can fail in ways nobody anticipated.
13. Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost profits, lost data or lost tokens arising from your use of UMBR, including losses caused by networks, wallets, relayers, token issuers or bugs. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the fees you paid us in the previous twelve months and USD 100. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
14. Changes, suspension and ending
We may change these terms. We will update the date at the top and, for material changes, give notice on the site. Continuing to use UMBR after a change means you accept it. We may suspend or end access to the interfaces we run, for example to comply with law or protect users. The contracts on-chain keep working independently of our interfaces.
15. Governing law
The governing law and the forum for disputes will be set out here once the legal review is complete. Until then, please contact us first so we can try to resolve any issue informally.
